The UFC heads to Melbourne, Australia for UFC 243, which takes place on Saturday, October 5. The promotion hopes the headlining bout of the ESPN+ streaming pay-per-view card can break the UFC attendance record. That contest features a middleweight title unification bout between Australian champion Robert Whittaker and New Zealand’s Israel Adesanya, who holds the interim middleweight crown.

Whittaker won the interim middleweight belt in July 2017 with a unanimous decision win over Yoel Romero. In December, he was promoted to undisputed champion when Georges St-Pierre relinquished the title. Whittaker was set to defend his title against Romero in June 2018, but that fight was switched to a non-title contest when Romero failed to make weight. Whittaker won that contest by split decision.

The Aussie competitor was then booked to face Kelvin Gastelum in February of this year at UFC 234. However, Whittaker was forced out of the bout on fight day when he underwent emergency surgery to repair an abdominal hernia and a collapsed bowel.

It was that surgery and the time Whittaker needed to recover that necessitated the interim title. Adesanya faced Gastelum for that belt in April at UFC 236. In one of the more entertaining title fights of 2019, Adesanya won a unanimous decision over Gastelum. The victory kept the New Zealander unbeaten at 17-0 and moved his UFC record to 6-0. All six of Adesanya’s UFC bouts have taken place since February 2018.On Saturday, Whittaker returns from a nearly 16-month break to face Adesanya with the winner walking away from Marvel Stadium, which seats almost 60,000 people, as the undisputed 185-pound champion.
