Perhaps this elf should have been shelved.

An overeager dad dressed in a full-on Buddy the Elf costume — from the 2003 Will Ferrell movie — to pick up his daughter after school, and her mortified reaction was priceless.

“Oh, my goodness, it’s Alayna!” Gregory Sumsion shouted at his high-schooler while wearing the yellow and green outfit and curly wig. “I know her! I know her!” he continued as he approached his shocked daughter, who exclaimed, “Why am I related to you?!” as her nearby mother captured the whole thing for TikTok. The video has been viewed nearly 6 million times.

“I want to sing you a song,” screamed the shameless dad, jumping around in the snow and excitedly grabbing at his teen daughter. “Alayna, I’m here, and I love you!” he sang as she jokingly swatted him away.

But don’t worry: She probably won’t get a big lump of coal in her stocking this year. “My daughter had the biggest smile when we got to the car,” Sumsion told one commenter, adding for another, “When we got in the car she said dad, I love you so much.”

Perhaps it’s no surprise that the elf impersonator’s Instagram bio reads: “A father that loves his kids.”

A second school ambush showed the dad picking up his son, Evan, from school while again wearing the festive ensemble. In it, he started a pillow fight with the beaming boy that ended in a big hug as other kids looked on.

In another video, the dad dispensed toys to kids in a grocery store from a red gift bag, passing along best wishes from Papa Elf, another character — played by Bob Newhart — in the cult-favorite comedy film.

He’s not the first to borrow from the Christmas movie to spread holiday cheer. Another man donned the Buddy look earlier this month when, just like in the film, he met his biological father for the first time, in this case at Boston’s Logan Airport.
