The duo chose to work with roof tiles, whose pre-existing curve and shape mimic a ‘lampshade’ form; the heaviness of the roof tiles also create a nice contrast with the softness of light. Old images of the mansion and garden are overlayed to represent the eclectic nature of the architecture and the family’s background.
Taking on the alternate role of contemporary archaeologists, alchemists and designers Julie & Jesse are experimenting with ceramic and textile in the making of sculptural objects to invite visitors of Haw Par Mansion to look, travel, wander and dwell into a reinterpreted microcosm of the lost Tiger Balm Gardens. Focusing on the stained glass tiger pattern, and the new musical context, they are developing a textile piece to act as acoustic panels.
