Needless to say, Mamma and her 3 babies lived under my house for about 4 months before she decided to move. They were so sweet. They would walk by my lawn chair in the evening, sniff my book or whatever I had nearby, and wander off to the neighbor’s garden. Never once got sprayed. On his way to work one very early morning, my husband encountered a skunk with a cup stuck on its head. He instinctively pulled over, went right over to the animal, and picked the skunk up by the cup.

When I asked if he was worried about getting sprayed, he said he didn’t even think of that. He just wanted the animal to be safe. Skunks are fairly defenseless. They have poor eyesight. If you talk to them quietly to warn them you are there it will startle them less. And there are worse things in the world than getting sprayed. Everyone does know that skunk spray has a toxin in it that can shut the respiratory system down right? Get enough of that toxin and its lights out. Not saying not to help skunks, but saying be careful.
