They did things with noise to caterpillars till they reacted to the noise than did it again after it became a butterfly and it still reacted so it has memories of being a caterpillar anyway so maybe the transformation too! A bunch of caterpillars ate my dad’s plants back in our old apartment. I took them and placed them in jars because birds liked to fly around the plants and I was sure they’d die if I left them there.

I took care of them and Butterfly Just a girl who loves sunflowers shirt, and then one by one they became butterflies. Before they left they would go on my hand and I’d give them a bit of sugar to help them on their journey. Then they’d fly off. It was nice. Caught this beautiful one on one of our many milkweed plants in our backyard. Hatched minutes before the picture was taken. We love watching the progression! There’s a great NPR segment about the mystery of what happens in a cacoon. It’s actually all goo. Even the caterpillar. Everything dissolves. The creature essentially starts over and then becomes a butterfly. Scientists don’t really understand it.
