Product Description

The game has also 148 The Countdown To 150 Billy Joel Madison Square Garden New York City May 9, 2024 T-shirt long had a connection to the rich. “It was one of the first sports that wealthy, upper middle-class men and women played together,” says Robert J Lake, author of A Social History of Tennis in Britain. “People tend to look to the rich and famous for new trends.” Gary Armstrong, editor of sport and fashion magazine CircleZeroEight, says this association with wealth and glamour helped forge the connection with fashion houses. Tennis players were ‘good enough’ to wear high fashion, whereas footballers weren’t,” he says. “There’s probably a higher percentage of tennis players who have endorsement deals with watch and perfume brands. Beauty brands like tennis because it’s not too sweaty.” The UK’s Emma Raducanu is a Dior ambassador; Jannik Sinner, the highest ranked Italian player in history, works with Gucci, and Carlos Alcaraz, 2023 men’s winner at Wimbeldon, is in adverts for Louis Vuitton. Though the players are known for their style, tennis’s dress codes remain strict. The French Open banned catsuits after Williams wore hers. Wimbledon’s rule that players should wear mostly white has been in place since the tournament began in 1877. It was tweaked last year to allow coloured undershorts to address female players’ anxiety about playing while they had their period.

Fashion justice 148 The Countdown To 150 Billy Joel Madison Square Garden New York City May 9, 2024 T-shirt solutions come from the communities most impacted by Big Fashion’s greed, which is why I am so excited about the Or Foundation’s Speak Volumes campaign. It’s led by the second-hand community at the Kantamanto market, in Accra, Ghana, who work tirelessly to cope with overproduction. Speak Volumes is demanding industry-wide accountability on annual production numbers, and is calling on all fashion brands to disclose their production volumes. In November, brands including Lucy & Yak, Finisterre and Stripe & Stare all disclosed their annual production volumes. This is a win for accountability as we look to develop data-driven policies that cap the amount of clothing Big Fashion produces. I’m excited about how enthusiastic and inspired young people are about conscious fashion and doing things differently to my own generation. When I started in this industry I would be constantly asked (in a quizzical way) why I focused on ‘sustainable fashion’. Now, younger people are asking me why there are fashion brands and organisations who aren’t doing things in a more conscious way.
