Single-shot look of ‘1917’ is a cinematic marvel

The World War I film is a technical astonishment but keeps the audience at an emotional distance. | ★★★ out of 4 stars

Relentless and surreal, “1917” tries to capture the chaos of being at war.

The Golden Globe winner’s story is quite simple: Two boyish Brits, Schofield (George MacKay) and Blake (Dean-Charles Chapman), are ordered to leave their World War I trench, run through enemy territory and deliver a message to another battalion that is about to launch an offensive against the Germans,

‘Top Gun: Maverick’ Trailer Takes A Ride Into The Comfort Zone
  • By michael@cvcteam.com

This second Top Gun: Maverick trailer offers almost nothing of value that we didn’t get from the first teaser back in July. There’s no real plot, no rundown of new characters and little in the way of thematic content beyond rehashing the greatest hits moments (Cruise on a motorcycle, a volley game game, hot men sans shirts, aerial tricks, familiar music, etc.) from the first Top Gun. Is this cause for concern, or are they just holding their cards until the third and presumably final trailer later next year?

Lil Uzi Vert Is Back With A New Song — And Dance

After weeks of teasing snippets, Lil Uzi Vert has released “Futsal Shuffle 2020,” the single that he’s “going with” from his long-awaited album Eternal Atake.

Like the best Uzi songs, it’s high-energy and disruptive. The synths sound plucked straight from an old Soulja Boy song, there are samples from Tyler, the Creator’s 2019 Camp Flog Gnaw set and Uzi’s notorious interview with Nardwuar and the dance — well, just try the dance. Consisting of a volley of kicks and hops that look like a cross between a soccer workout routine and Dance Dance Revolution footwork,

In her own Marvel stand-alone picture, the title hero, an ex-KGB assassin, springs into action after the events of “Captain America: Civil War.”

“I used to have nothing,” the title character, played by Scarlett Johansson, says in the first trailer for “Black Widow.” And “then I got this job, this family, but nothing lasts forever.”

Nothing except, it seems, the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The first entry in the series since the apparent finale,

Critics are telling the hard truth about the film “Good Liar.”

Ian McKellen stars as Roy Courtnay, a charming career con artist who has his eyes set on his next target: Gullible, wealthy widow Betty McLeish, played by Helen Mirren.

Most critics, however, say the crime thriller’s plot was “clunky” and “underwhelming,” despite the best efforts from the British acting legends. (“Good Liar” has a Metacritic rating of 54 out of 100 and is listed as 63% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes as of Friday evening.)
