SOUTHAMPTON, England — Jurgen Klopp told us not to worry about Mohamed Salah.

A full 55 days after his 49th league goal for Liverpool, Salah scored his 50th to turn what had looked like a nervous, near-title-challenge-ending draw with Southampton into a 3-1 victory Friday that will put them on top of the Premier League for at least another nine days.

PHILADELPHIA — A lot of Phillies fans didn’t bother to purchase new jerseys in recent years. As the franchise rolled out increasingly mediocre and unfamiliar lineups, many of the fans who bothered to show up at Citizens Bank Park did so with Utley, Howard or a different 2011 teammate written across their backs.

That tide began to turn last season, when the Phillies put together four months of promising baseball before fading hard down the stretch.

NEW YORK — In the Bronx, the old saying is you can’t predict baseball, but Opening Day was as predictable as it gets. The Yankees beat up on the visiting Orioles for their first win of the 2019 season (NYY 7, BAL 2). Andrew Cashner couldn’t complete five innings and, for much of the afternoon, it was a clear mismatch.

The Yankees scored all the runs they would need right in the first inning.

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Jordan Bone could have had flashbacks Sunday at Nationwide Arena.

The Tennessee junior guard got a good look at a 3-pointer with a chance to beat Iowa and secure Tennessee a Sweet 16 spot, just as he did last year against Loyola Chicago.

He missed, as he did then. And Tennessee, which once led by 25, headed for overtime against Iowa, which frantically came back to put UT’s season in serious jeopardy.

One year after UMBC stunned the nation by becoming the first 16-seed to take out a No. 1 in the first round of the NCAA tournament, the Gardner-Webb Runnin’ Bulldogs outplayed Virginia in the first half of their game Friday and took a six-point lead into the locker room at halftime.

The Cavaliers were blown out by UMBC in 2018, and coach Tony Bennett’s team got off to a terrible start against Gardner-Webb.

HARTFORD, Conn. — It was long expected to be the main event at the XL Center on Thursday: Murray State. Marquette. Ja Morant. Markus Howard.

It more than lived up to the hype.

Howard was good, but Morant was magnificent — dunking on top of people, hitting step-back threes and dazzling with wraparound passes that turned into wide-open shots for teammates.

He became just the eighth player ever to record a triple-double in the NCAA tournament,
