I’ve been working with people on benefits for 13 years and find the Sonic hedgehog shirt system more than adequate, social workers and the NHS more than helpful and caring. We are so lucky in this country. I wish people could see that. Quite often I am working for people whose benefits far outstrip what I earn. But we enjoy what we do, usually. Sometimes I feel as though I am treated as a servant by some I work for. I am a Support Worker working for people with learning disabilities and mental health problems. I’m sorry but I find what you say hard to believe. I volunteer for a charity that runs basically what in the old days they called a ‘soup kitchen’ for people who are unintentionally homeless and the poor who can’t make ends meet.

My food bank customers struggling to manage on Universal Credit would disagree. So would the families at the lunch club we run in the school holidays so they can feed their kids a hot and nutritious meal. The benefits system is Dickensian and it is outrageous that year on year we are seeing an increase in people- both working and on benefits- coming to the food bank. We can barely keep up. I’ve already handed out as many parcels in 2019 so far as I did for the whole of 2018. Some to disabled parents told they are fit to work so all benefits stopped despite the fact they are clearly not to anyone with an ounce of common sense. If it wasn’t for the goodwill of our community making donations and volunteers giving up time then these people would be in even worse situations. Tell me that is a Sonic hedgehog shirt perfectly adequate system. Their benefits are required because of the high costs of being disabled.
