I was just waiting for midnight to roll around so I could close the Let thank and giving be more than just a season shirt. I sat down next to my mom and leaned up against her. She put her arm around me, kissed me on my head and told me she loved me. I felt a little better, I’m not gonna lie. Moms in general are awesome and mine is the best. She’s magic. The mans face changed instantly from the drunken sneer I was politely ignoring to horror and disgust. His wife/girlfriend’s eyes got huge and she immediately started whispering to him and pulling him towards the exit. I did not register any of this information in the moment. I just start shuffling back to sit back down with my mom.

Which is why I clearly heard him as he passed her booth on the Let thank and giving be more than just a season shirt. My mom totally played me but she’s magic so I’ve come to expect it. People have said some terrible things to me too but I barely remember the scene let alone the details. Hateful, bitter people are that way because of their own issues. Those aren’t your issues. Don’t own them. For some reason, before and after her maternity leave, I have always felt like she had beef with me. I let it go, because I wanted to learn the trade than engage in stupid office politics. I did my job well during those 6 months, even earning awards for outstanding work and behavior.
