So it ends for Manchester United, as they lose 1-0 at home to Barcelona in the first leg of their Champions League quarterfinal matchup.
Barcelona has its away goal, and United has a tall task ahead of them in the second leg. That being said, a 1-0 loss to Lionel Messi and Barcelona isn’t the worst thing in the world.
The game started brightly, but in the second half things seemed to stall. Barcelona was content with a 1-0 lead going back to Camp Nou, and Manchester United were (understandably) scared to commit too many men forward when the Barcelona front three was so eager to launch a counter-attack.
United did look to grow in confidence as the game went on, and they did have their chances. It’s just they weren’t clinical enough, and Luis Suarez was when he converted a header from a low angle to give Barcelona the lead and the win.

Absolutely no explanation for an offside call that was initially given against Suarez, though VAR quickly corrected the mistake and just like that Barcelona is ahead. A lovely bit of possession, a cross from Messi to the head of Suarez, who finishes from a low angle and gives Barcelona the lead.

29′ – Lionel Messi is bleeding profusely from his face after Chris Smalling won a ball over him, and by “won a ball over him” I mean “mauled him and somehow nothing got called.”

Seconds later, McTominay has a nice move on Pique in the box and goes down, but probably oversold it and got no call.

HALFTIME – The score remains Barcelona 1 – 0 Manchester United thanks to a goal from Luis Suarez. Manchester United had their chances, but they weren’t as clinical as the Barcelona side and that’s the difference so far.
Also, this happened to Jordi Alba, which made me laugh

Preview
Barcelona will take on Manchester United in the Champions League quarterfinal on Wednesday, in one of the biggest soccer matches of the year.
United manager Ole Gunnar Solksjaer will have a massive test trying to figure out how to contain Lionel Messi and the rest of Barcelona, and fair credit to him: His lineup appears to be one that is more attacking-oriented than one might have thought. But it is the home fixture, and if United is going to hang with Barcelona, they’re gonna need to score some goals before the trip back to Barcelona.
As for Barcelona, the big thing in this match is keeping it tight and trying to nick a goal away from home. I’m guessing they’ll defend and look to score on the counter, and when you have Lionel Messi, he can sometimes just do it all by himself. Stay tuned as we provide updates during the game.
